Bladder Health 101: Why It Matters and How to Keep It Strong

Why Bladder Health Should Be a Priority: Essential Tips for Wellness

Millions of women, both young and old, deal with bladder control issues every day. But you don’t have to suffer in silence—there are ways to strengthen your pelvic floor and regain control of your bladder.

At Besana Health and Wellness in Denver, Colorado, we understand how frustrating and isolating bladder issues can feel. But with the right information and treatment, you can take control of your bladder health, strengthen your pelvic floor, and reduce urinary incontinence.

Understanding Bladder Health and Why It Matters

Your bladder is a vital organ that stores urine before it’s excreted. Maintaining its health is crucial for overall well-being. Many factors, such as aging, childbirth, menopause, and lifestyle choices, can affect the bladder’s functionality, leading to incontinence, infections, or even bladder prolapse. Unfortunately, bladder health is often a topic that often goes undiscussed, leaving many women unaware of the simple steps they can take to maintain a healthy bladder.

One key element that many women don’t know is the role their pelvic floor muscles play in bladder control. The pelvic floor is a group of muscles that support the bladder, uterus, and bowel. When these muscles become weak or strained (due to pregnancy, aging, or even high-impact exercises), they can lead to urinary incontinence—especially when you laugh, sneeze, or lift heavy objects.

Tips for Maintaining a Healthy Bladder

Bladder health doesn’t just happen by chance. It’s something you can actively improve through lifestyle changes and daily habits. Here are some tips for keeping your bladder in top shape:

  1. Stay Hydrated (But Not Too Much)
While it might seem counterintuitive, staying hydrated is important for bladder health. Drinking water helps dilute urine and prevents bladder irritation. However, avoid overhydrating, as this can put unnecessary strain on your bladder. Aim for half of your body weight in ounces.  For example, if you weigh 150 pounds, you goal is 75 ounces of water per day.
  2. Avoid Bladder Irritants
Certain foods and drinks can irritate your bladder and exacerbate incontinence issues. Try to limit your intake of caffeine, alcohol, acidic foods (like citrus fruits), and spicy foods.
  3. Practice Bladder Training
Training your bladder to hold urine longer can help improve bladder control. Start by using the restroom at regular intervals (every two to three hours), then gradually increase the time between bathroom visits. This helps to strengthen your bladder muscles and reduce the frequency of leaks.
  4. Maintain a Healthy Weight
Carrying extra weight puts added pressure on your bladder, which can lead to incontinence. Maintaining a healthy weight through a balanced diet, regular exercise, or possibly through our weight loss program, can help relieve this pressure and improve bladder control.
  5. Do Pelvic Floor Exercises
Kegel exercises are a well-known method for strengthening the pelvic floor. By contracting and relaxing the muscles that control urination, you can help support your bladder. But here’s the catch—many women don’t perform Kegels correctly or consistently enough to see real improvement. That’s where BTL Emsella ® comes in.

How BTL Emsella ® Can Help Strengthen Your Pelvic Floor

BTL Emsella ® is a non-invasive treatment that strengthens the pelvic floor muscles to help combat urinary incontinence. The best part? You don’t need to do Kegels on your own. Emsella uses high-intensity focused electromagnetic (HIFEM) technology to stimulate thousands of powerful pelvic floor contractions in a single session. These contractions are far more effective than what you can achieve through regular Kegels, and all you have to do is sit in a chair.

Each Emsella session lasts about 30 minutes, and during that time, your pelvic floor undergoes the equivalent of 11,000 Kegel exercises. This treatment is perfect for women of all ages who experience stress incontinence or urge incontinence, and it’s completely painless with no downtime.

A Few Surprising Facts About Urinary Incontinence

While urinary incontinence is common, most women don’t realize how prevalent it really is. Statistics show that about 1 in 3 women experience some form of urinary incontinence during their lifetime. In fact, it’s so widespread that many women think it’s a normal part of aging or motherhood, but it doesn’t have to be.

Incontinence can also affect women who are fit and active. High-impact sports like running or weightlifting can put stress on the pelvic floor, leading to urinary leaks. Many athletes are surprised to discover that their dedication to fitness may actually be contributing to their bladder control issues.

How Besana Health and Wellness Can Help

Bladder health plays a significant role in your overall well-being and quality of life.
