Low Dose Naltrexone

At low doses, naltrexone — an FDA-approved opioid antagonist — can reduce inflammation and autoimmunity activity. Known as low dose naltrexone (LDN), this medication has been proven to successfully treat and manage symptoms associated with a wide range of autoimmune diseases, ultimately giving patients a better quality of life.

Patients with autoimmune diseases tend to have lower levels of endorphins, hormones which create a general feeling of well-being. Low dose naltrexone partially blocks endorphins by attaching to opioid receptors. This signals the brain to increase production of endorphins. These “feel good” chemicals play an important role in maintaining proper immune function, preventing it from overreacting and causing symptom flare-ups.

Low dose naltrexone can be beneficial in treating the following autoimmune diseases:

  • Hashimoto’s thyroiditis
  • Rheumatoid arthritis
  • Lupus
  • Crohn’s disease
  • Ulcerative colitis
  • Multiple sclerosis
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Chronic fatigue
  • Psoriasis and more

FAQs: Low Dose Naltrexone IN DENVER, CO

What is naltrexone?

Naltrexone is an opioid antagonist, which means it blocks the effect of opioid drugs. At high doses (50-300 mg), naltrexone is used to treat alcohol and opioid addiction, but at low doses (1.5-4.5 mg), it can help reduce inflammation and pain in the body.

How does LDN differ from naltrexone?

The main difference between the two is their dosage. While naltrexone completely blocks endorphin receptors while you’re awake, low dose naltrexone only temporarily blocks receptors while you’re sleeping. With LDN, once the blockage of endorphins wears off, it allows the body to make more receptors and the immune system to heal.

Are there any side effects with LDN?

The most common side effects of LDN are vivid dreams or difficulty sleeping. If these symptoms occur, they may last a few days to weeks. If the side effects are severe, you can reduce your dose for one week or take it in the morning. You should also avoid narcotic medications while on LDN.

What can I expect when taking LDN?

Do not use narcotics while taking LDN. Start at a low dosage and space out the medication over several weeks. LDN is typically taken at bedtime so it can work in the body overnight. The medication tends to work best when used in conjunction with an autoimmune diet.
