Laser skin treatments are a wonderful way to achieve glowing skin, but all the laser treatments in the world are nothing if you’re still tanning your skin. Though it’s tempting to get a little “color” now and then, your tan represents sun damaged skin cells and everything else that comes with it, from sunspots to wrinkles to sagging skin. This is because every second of unprotected sun exposure puts massive amounts of stress on your skin cells, causing them to break down and prematurely age.
Translation: If you are in the market for a lit-from-within glow that lasts all life long, the most important tip we can give you is wearing your sunscreen every day. Sorry, we know this tip isn’t exactly exciting (but keep reading!).
We understand that you may be skeptical about this. After all, sunscreen is not exactly glamorous. How can it be our #1 beauty weapon? First of all, if you think this, you are simply not wearing the right sunscreen! Today’s medical-grade sunscreen formulas are amazing, multitasking as dewy concealers, bronzers, mattifying, oil-control primers and so much more.
Advanced formulas aside, even just regular sunscreen can work wonders to improve the look of your skin. This is clinically proven! A year or so ago, a study came out that compared daily sunscreen users with non-users. After a year of applying sunscreen daily, the sunscreen users had skin that looked younger and better than at the start of the study. This means that the sunscreen not only prevented sun damage, but it also helped to reverse it! Compare this to the non-sunscreen users, who aged regularly. Even just regular sunscreen helps to keep your skin looking its best. Now if that’s not going to convince you to wear sunscreen daily, we don’t know what will!
Most importantly, now that the intense summer sun is upon us, wearing your sunscreen is crucial because it dramatically reduces your risk of skin cancer. Since you’re outdoors a lot these days, here’s a refresher on the warning signs of skin cancer, so you can get checked out ASAP if you see something suspicious. The sooner skin cancer is diagnosed the higher your survival rate:
- A for Asymmetry
- B for Border that is irregular
- C for Color that is varied
- D for Diameter (the size of a pencil eraser or larger)
- E for Evolving (changing in size, shape, color)
If you spy a suspicious lesion or mole, have your dermatologist check it out ASAP!
